If you want to have a new bathtub installed in your bathroom, then you have some material options to choose from. While fiberglass and porcelain are popular choices, many people choose inexpensive acrylic bathtubs instead. These installations can be a good investment as well. There are some basic drawbacks to choosing the bathtubs, but you can do several things to keep the drawbacks from causing issues. Keep reading to learn what you should do.

Stay Away From Abrasive Cleaners

One of the major drawbacks of choosing an acrylic bathtub is the fact that acrylic is more likely to scratch than porcelain or fiberglass. However, you can keep scratches and scrapes at bay by avoiding the use of abrasive cleaning agents. Abrasive cleaners include ones that contain calcium carbonate. For example, Comet contains this hard material because it can remove soap scum.

Thankfully, you do not need calcium carbonate to remove soap scum. You can easily release the accumulated soap with the assistance of vinegar. Simply spray the vinegar on the acrylic tub and wait 15 minutes. You should not use a scrub brush on the acrylic tub either or scratches may appear. Use a sponge instead and use a soft-bristled brush made from nylon only if the sponge is unable to release the debris.

You should also be aware that is not wise to use bleach or any solvent on the acrylic, because these chemicals can destroy the bathtub. You can use ammonia though, and this is a good alternative to bleach.

If you do happen to accidentally scratch the acrylic tub, you can use a polishing compound to remove them. This is best if normal wear and tear issues cause some of the scratches to develop. If the scratches are mild, you may be able to use baking soda and water or even toothpaste to buff out the scrapes. Use a toothbrush to add the buffing agent and then clean it away with plain water when you are done.

Consider Fiberglass Reinforcement

One of the benefits of an acrylic bathtub is the fact that it is fairly lightweight. This is extremely helpful if you need the bathtub placed on the second floor of your home. However, the lightweight nature of the acrylic also means that it is not as heavy and solid as other materials. In particular, the acrylic is flexible and pliable. This means that it may seem flimsy or soft.

If you want a sturdier bathtub, then you can choose an acrylic one with fiberglass reinforcement. These bathtubs are strong like fiberglass ones, but they are less expensive. They also retain the lighter weight of an acrylic tub.
